The City of Duncan is committed to achieving our community's target of zero-waste. Already our collective recycling efforts have reduced the amount of garbage being trucked to the Cache Creek landfill by 50%. Please continue to help us reduce, reuse and recycle. For more information about the region's waste management plan, go to the CVRD's website.

Please note that backyard burning has been completely banned in the City of Duncan for a number of years. There is also a new Valley-wide initiative in place designed to reduce backyard burning - Cowichan Valley residents can now dump their yard waste for free at the Bing's Creek site year round. Call Bing's Creek at the number listed below for more information.

The City of Duncan currently has a recycling contract with WSI. Recyclables will be picked up every other week on your garbage collection day. Recycling bags, stickers for cans and calendars can be picked up from City Hall, 200 Craig Street at no charge. If you are a business, lease contact City Hall to find out about the recycling and garbage services available to you.

Curbside Recycling

  • Refuse and Recyclables should be out by 7:30 a.m. on your collection day.
  • Refuse and Recyclables are collected by two vehicles, likely at different times of the day.
  • Your Recyclables are to be placed in the yellow reusable bags which will be supplied for your continued use or in a can 24" x 18" with a "recycle" sticker affixed to it.
  • Bags are reusable. Please fasten a weight to the bottom of them or find some method to keep your bag from blowing away.
  • Containers other than the bags can be used but they may be no larger than 18" x 24" and weigh less than 50 lbs (23 kg); and are clearly marked RECYCLING. An easy way is to attach the provided recycling bag to the container.
  • Bing's Creek depot on Drinkwater Road, west of Highway 18, takes yard & garden waste in small quantities only (i.e. grass clippings) and they must be bagged.
  • Glass can be disposed of at the CVRD multi bins; some can be returned for refund of deposit.

Frequently asked questions:
  • What is meant by "two standard sized containers" for refuse collection? Two standard cans (77 litre).

  • What if I have more than the allotted amount of refuse I want to have picked up? Exceeding the above limits requires an "Extra Container Sticker" which can be purchased at City Hall (200 Craig Street) for $2 each.
  • What if I don't want to participate in the curbside recycling program? Municipal bylaws require that recyclables that have a method of disposal not be collected in the refuse stream. All identifiable recyclables with an available recycling alternative will be left at the curb.
  • What is the cost for curbside recycling? Recycling service is $12.00 per home per year and is included in residents' utility bill. Recycling is part of an obligation we all share to reduce the waste stream. Please join in our waste reduction program.
